Flying over San Francisco, you’ll likely see an array of colors ranging from grassy green and rusty orange to bold magenta. These long-enjoyed features are salt evaporation ponds, built in the mid-19th century. Beautiful to the eye, these ponds also became a haven for birds looking for an easy meal. Over time, the San Francisco National Wildlife Refuge began acquiring the land to preserve the land and the wildlife.
